Uno, nessuno e centomila

Attuale ancora oggi (e non potrebbe essere che così) la storia raccontata da Luigi Pirandello in “Uno, nessuno e centomila”. Nel libro il protagonista, Vitangelo Moscarda, un giorno si rende conto di non essere per gli altri quello che lui crede di essere. Le tante realtà, maschere, che la società di volta in volta gli mette addosso gli procurano angosce e turbamenti ai quali cerca di sottrarsi riuscendoci solo rifiutando il suo stesso nome e la sua personalità. In manicomio, Vitangelo trova l’annullamento completo da se stesso e abbandonandosi allo scorrere mutevole della vita si riconosce in ogni cosa in una completa estraniazione dalla società.
Lo spazio virtuale di internet permette di annullare la personalità dell’individuo facendo indossare liberamente e facilmente maschere personali differenti ma anche qui il signor Vitangelo Moscarda non ha scampo: una foto, un commento, una condivisione, un mi piace conducono a centomila maschere di chi osserva nonostante la facilità di creare le proprie.

Still strikingly relevant today (and how could it not be) is the story told by Luigi Pirandello in One, No One and One Hundred Thousand. In the novel, the protagonist, Vitangelo Moscarda, suddenly realizes one day that he is not, for others the person he believes himself to be. The many realities masks that society places upon him, one after another, cause deep anxiety and disorientation. He attempts to escape them, and succeeds only by rejecting his own name and identity. In the asylum, Vitangelo finds a complete dissolution of self and in surrendering to the ever changing flow of life he recognizes himself in everything entirely detached from society.
The virtual space of the internet offers a similar erasure of individual identity. It allows anyone to freely and easily adopt new personal masks. Yet even here, Signor Vitangelo Moscarda finds no escape: a photo, a comment, a shared post, a simple “like” each act leads to one hundred thousand masks, shaped not by the self, but by the gaze of others, despite the illusion of control.
